Posted on: July 17, 2010 | Category: miscellaneous | 13 Comments

A new Tweet-Parade; The best Tweets found on Twitter about new articles posted on the various blogs about webdesign, graphic design, typography and design in common.

The best way to keep track of these tweets is simply to follow me on Twitter. Also I see this as my personal bookmarks of great articles from the Community of the last period. The different articles and post are categorized by their main topics:

Webdesign, CSS, HTML, jQuery, etc.

Improve Your Skills: 25 jQuery Beginner Tutorials Roundup – jQuery is the most popular JavaScript library that highlights the interaction between JavaScript and HTML. With jQuery you can write less and do more. jQuery has become an active trend and it’s features are growing rapidly.

12 Tools To Reevaluate And Analyze Your Web Design – Nowadays there are pretty many tools to analyze your site’s code and traffic, but there aren’t that much tools to evaluate design and accessibility. Personally, I think that best ‘tool’ to evaluate web design is other people feedback.

THE DISTANCE BETWEEN MAKER AND USER – Recently I was part of a user testing study in which I observed someone using the software I had designed. At one point the user did something he wasn’t supposed to do (in theory) and in an instant I saw the problem. The descriptive text I had written was on the wrong screen…instead of the previous screen it should have been on this screen.

The 960 Grid System Made Easy - The first time I discovered the 960 Grid System, I was immediately excited about the possibilities of implementing complex layouts so easily. However, since I was fairly new to web design at the time, when I downloaded the files, I quickly became overwhelmed at how complicated the whole thing seemed.

http://css3pie.com/ – CSS Level 3 brings with it some incredibly powerful styling features. Rounded corners, soft drop shadows, gradient fills, and so on. These are the kinds of elements our designer friends love to use because they make for attractive sites, but are difficult and time-consuming to implement, involving complex sprite images, extra non-semantic markup, large JavaScript libraries, and other lovely hacks.

Seven Super Quick Tips for Beginner and Amateur Web Designers – Web design is a tricky art that combines both the creative and the analytical skill sets to create something unique and visually compelling. At the end of the day, good web design is more than the sum of its parts.

5 Web Files That Will Improve Your Website - The files I’ll talk about here were chosen for their usefulness as well as their ease of implementation. Maximum bang for our buck. We’re going to cover robots.txt, favicon.ico, sitemap.xml, dublin.rdf and opensearch.xml. Their purposes range from helping search engines index your site accurately, to acting as usability and interoperability aids.

The Beauty of Semantic Markup, Part 1: Quotes & Citations – As I mentioned in my introduction, this series is going to take a close look at the fundamentals of semantic markup. In this first installment, I’m focusing on quotes and citations. Before we get started, if you’d like to know more about semantic markup …

4 Dangerous Mistakes Web Designers Make When Presenting Content – Everybody these days knows that content is king. No website ever sold anything without content to persuade its readers to buy. And it’s the job of the web designer to present that content as effectively as possible.

10 jQuery Slider Techniques and Plugins – Last year we posted a collection of jQuery slider techniques and plugins. In a years time the trend of using these types of sliders or slideshows to display featured content has only grown more popular.

Graphic Design, Brand Identity, Typography, etc.

The Problem with Free Fonts – Typography is a pretty big deal in the design community, and it seems that not a day goes by where I don’t see some sort of article showcasing a collection of free fonts in my RSS feeds or posted on Twitter.

22 Wave Logos – The “Festoon” Logo Design Trend of 2010 – Trends are prevalent in every industry and logo design is no exception. Trends and fads enable us to forecast which logo designs will prove to be successful in the year to follow. But the intriguing thing about logos is that you cannot accurately make logo design trend predictions.

http://www.freefontconverter.com/ - FontConverter.com allows you to quickly convert between many font formats without the hassle of installing any software on your computer. Our service works on any operating system including Windows, Mac and Linux.

With beautiful type comes great responsibility – To keep things short, the article only went into enough detail to say the problem is that they become “bludgeoned to death through massive over use.” While this certainly holds true, it’s not really the “problem” with free fonts, or fonts in general.

Corporate Identity / Logo Usage Guides – Documents that illustrate how organizations control their public image ~ Great resource!

Blogging, Social Media, Wordpress etc.

Wordpress SEO Guideline – Search engine traffic (also primarily referred to as organic google traffic) is for most web sites and blogs the most important source. Over the last 30 days Google delivered 38% of the traffic to tripwire magazine.

On design blogging – I’ve never liked the term “blogging”. It sounds a bit buzzy but I guess it’s becoming more acceptable these days. I still refuse to use the word “tweeting” in real life conversation without following it up with “I can’t believe I said that”. Ignoring the vocabulary blogging and tweeting have become a big part of my professional life since leaving University.

How to get exponential success on your blog – Like most bloggers do, this morning I checked my Feedburner stats and see that my blog Cats Who Code had 6000+ RSS subscribers. I decided to check out how many readers I had one year ago. I wasn’t surprised to read that I only had 900 readers at the time.

Ping Multiple Update Service for Better SEO and Faster Indexing – If you are serious about blogging, you are probably also serious about traffic. Blogs are typically updated often and it is important to let as many as possible know when a new post has been published. Most important is the search engine spiders as you want organic traffic from search engines.

Use Twitter Moderately and Properly, Twitter Marketing Mistakes – A lot of people use Twitter in the wrong way. They will just keep tweeting sales messages and affiliate links and wonder why those do not convert well. The truth is that we need to understand Twitter properly whenever trying to use it efficiently.

24 Helpful Google Chrome Extensions for Bloggers – Competition between Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome has been intense since the day Google released their official browser. Chrome is the only browser to hit the market and became so much successful in a short span of time. It has outperformed Apple Safari and Opera in speed and surpassed the extensibility of Firefox.

SEO, Search Engine Optimalization, Rankings, etc.

How to Know When Your Site Needs SEO Before Social Media – As much as I enjoy working with companies to build sustainable social media strategies, the truth is my services are not always going to deliver the best bang for their buck. There are times when it simply makes more sense to focus on search engine optimization.

Build Links Through Social Media – For the first years when social media made it onto the playing field of marketing companies where not sure what to do with it, now if you avoid it you could face a serious downfall with your business. SEO and social media go hand-in-hand and has become a crucial ingredient to marketing any business.

Keywords Tool: The Ten Tips to Help You Get More Traffic – SEO marketers make use of different promotions, some would even go to the extent of buying the traffic that they need! There’s no need for that, as long as you have a good keyword finder and bearing in mind these top 10 things to gain more traffic; you’d get more traffic without spending so much as a dime

SEO Strategy Tips – Get it Right! – To some it means simply putting together a series of inbound links that look like a science project and to others it looks like an online marketing business building plan aimed to actually brand and generate revenue, I think I would take the second approach.

Tutorials

Mixing Type and Imagery: How to Manage a Controlled Collision - By setting images in type, you are able to express more than words or pictures can alone. The effect packs a lot of information into a tight space. But it can get ugly if the text and imagery are at odds with each other. Designers can steer clear of disaster by keeping their purpose in mind: expressing the idea clearly should trump the “wow” factor of the technique.

20 More Useful Adobe Illustrator Menu Tips – We have seen many useful tips on Illustrator’s menu commands by talented designers before. Here are some more! Some of these were mentioned earlier too, while some are really helpful and less common. Let’s have a look!

effective cold calling techniques, tips and methods for selling and sales training – Cold calling typically refers to the first telephone call made to a prospective customer. More unusually these days, cold calling can also refer to calling face-to-face for the first time without an appointment at commercial premises or households.

The Nightmare Client,YOU – Creative freedom—It’s the thing we love, the thing we crave. You get to design however you damn well please. Pretty great! And pretty darn overwhelming too. About 99.9999% of the work we do is created to meet other people’s design objectives. Rarely do we ever sit and ponder, “what kind of designer am I?

Client Retention: A Key Ingredient for Freelancing Success – Working as a freelance designer is a challenging job. Not only do you have to be a skilled designer, but you also need to be able to find work and run a profitable business. Landing new clients can be a lot of work and can require a considerable amount of time on your part.
