Free Blog Promotion to Boost Traffic

If you want more people to see your blog, you need to promote it! There are several ways to do so, but I like splitting them into: paid and free promotion. Paid promotion is quite expensive so I will cover some of the free promotion methods here.
In this next article I’ll will point out a couple of these methods, but remember: using these free methods means spending loads of time and you’ll need some dedication here. Bottom-line: It depend on you if you want to promote your blog to boost your traffic.
Here are some of the tips to boost your blog traffic using free blog promotion methods:
Comment on other Blogs
Commenting is one of the main reason blogs exist and they are the best traffic source for your blog. The gonzoblog.nl and many other blogs give ’relevant’ comment about the article a ‘dofollow’-backlink (BTW: brilliant article about this topic: I Stopped Using Nofollow & You Should Too! on sitesketch101.com).
When you comment on any blog, you need to fill in your name, your (blog/website) URL and your mail-address. After you done this and placed your comment your name will be linked with your URL. Everybody knows that this will help to improve your ranking on the search engines.
When you leave a constructive, or interesting and useful comment on other relevant blogs, people can follow the link back to your blog to learn more about you and read more of what you have to say. Well, that’s the way it works with me!
Social Networking
Social networking is a very good free traffic-booster for your blog or corporate website, social networking sites can also help to increase your pagerank. Loads of social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and MySpace are available (Here in the Netherlands Hyves.nl is popular to).
On all of these social networksites you can create your profile and fill out your bio and your blog or website link (note: most of these links are ‘nofollow’). Share your thoughts, images and interesting news with the community or your friends. Create awareness of your blog on social networking sites.
Tip: Check to see if your desired username or vanity url is still available at dozens of popular Social Networking and Social Bookmarking websites. Promote your brand consistently by registering a username that is still available on the majority of the most popular sites.- http://namechk.com/
I myself focus on Twitter with my daily remarks, findings or news about my work. The good thing about Twitter is that you can upload your Twitter-feed into your Facebook, LinkedIn, MySpace and other social network accounts, even in your (X)HTML-website! Also you can share great blog-articles from other blogging-sites on twitter and facebook.
Social Bookmarking Services
Social Bookmarking Services (sometimes also called: Blog Catalog or Directory) means you can save all your bookmarks online, share them with other people and see what other people are bookmarking; On these websites you can share, search, browse, rate and review thousands of blog sites, web pages, photos, and videos.
Most famous index-websites are StumbleUpon, Technorati, Digg, Blogcatalogus, Delicious, DesignBump
Post Frequently
I have discussed this topic in a previous article here on the gonzoblog.nl: How Frequent Do You Add a New Post? Posting frequently will give you visitor-repetition, what boosts your traffic and helps indexing your content in the major search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. This method can boost your search engines traffic. I’m trying to post each 5-7 days a new post out here (the gonzoblog.nl is all about quality, not quantity).
Guest Blogging
A great way to get exposure for your blog is writing for other blogs as a guest writer. Guest blogging is a great way to get links to your blog and your own thoughts and writing in front of people who are likely to be interested in learning more about you and your blog.
Include Blog Link in Email Signature, Website, Business Card, etc
Your corporate website and email signature are just two obvious places to promote your blog with a hyperlink or a printed URL. Promotion is the main key to success when it comes to blogging, in general, include your blog URL everywhere you can.
If you have more blogs or sites, make links between them. Linking can increase page ranking and therefore the traffic to your blogging site. Hyperlinking can also be used to promote your blog through different channels that might attract different audiences.
Carnival Blog
A blog carnival consists of a group of blog posts which is focused on a certain theme. You can think of a blog carnival as being somewhat similar to a magazine. It has both a title and topic. Like a magazine, the blog carnival has editors and contributors who help to operate it. Finally, it must have an audience who will read the content.
A blog carnival is where someone takes the time to find really good blog posts on a given topic, and then puts all those posts together in a blog post called a “carnival”. A good example of a carnival Blog is BlogMixer.com.
If done correctly, this can be an effective marketing tool to help boost your blog’s traffic and number of backlinks. Blog carnivals are a great way for bloggers to recognize each other’s efforts, organize blog posts around important topics and improve the overall level of conversation in the blogosphere. If it is a good and interesting post, people will then want to come to your blog.
