Small business can be losing out on a large customer base if they underestimate the power of the Internet and how maintaining a well optimized website has many benefits. People seek information on services or products on the Internet. Let’s take a look at SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and what this means for your small or medium enterprise.
SEO stands for search engine optimization. Search engine optimizers are professionals who can take your website, optimize it correctly and in the end, bring you a lot of traffic and potential customers.
Let’s take a look at why search engine optimalization is so important and how this can apply to a small or medium enterprises. Everyone has a website in today’s world, from international companies to personal sites. When someone wants to find out about services or products, they turn to their computer.
It’s very important for a small business to have a well planned out website . You want any person to easily see what you offer, who you are and by which methods they may obtain your services or products. However, you can have a wonderful website, this does not help you if no one can find you.
But remember, it will do your small business no good if you can only be found by the particular name of your business.

You want to be found when people enter in certain keywords. What are keywords, you may ask?
Keywords are words that the average person enters into a search bar of a Search Engine to find out information.
For example: if you sell bread and baked goods you would want your bakery’s website to come up high in the search results for “bread and baked goods”.
The goal of most business websites is to appear on the first page of results. Very rarely does the average person look passed the first page. If they do, it is even more rare if they look passed the third page. You can always pay to appear first (e.g. Google Adwords), this would be a sponsored listing. This process is called SEM, what stands for Search Engine Marketing. However, if you website text is optimized correctly, you can appear highly ranked for the key words of your choice.
The goal of optimizing a site is to edit the content and coding to both increase its significance to particular keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.
This means you need to have a valide (according the W3C-webstandards) source-code, having your content seperated from your layout (CSS), visual effect (javascripts) etc. Concerning the content of your website, keyword-density is one of the main aspect Search Engines look for, but be careful. Doing this the wrong way (e.g. hidden, non-visible layers/divs loaded with keywords is not very smart to do, … you can get banned from Google!).
The majority of people search via Google, although other search engines are used as well. In most cases, a website should be created to please Google and other search engines will follow along. Do SEO for your small business and you will be seen by more people than you thought possible. If you are not optimized correctly, you could land so far back in the search results that no one will ever find you. Never underestimate the need for proper SEO for your small business.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results as opposed to search engine marketing (SEM) which deals with paid inclusion. Typically, the earlier (or higher) a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.

Hi,
Thanks for the great beginner article about SEO. From my own experiences I can say, that many beginning businesee forget SEO totally. They have no clue how to use it and what they could potentially receive.
This is also very true for beginning websites, blogs and similar sites. People just do not understand SEO and they will lose a lot in search engine traffic.
Hi Social Media Guide,
Thanks for your comment, it’s oh so true! SEO is one of the most important things for your site/blog (and I’m not saying this to get more SEO-projects, hihi).
SEO is a continious process to get your blog/site found with your desired keywords. Because, … what’s the value of a blog/site that can’t be found? It’s the same as yelling out in open space, … no one will hear your message …

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I’d like to write like this too – taking time and real effort to make a good article… but what can I say… I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
Hi Tom,
thanks for your super-comment, you’ve just made my day! You’re right, it’s all about taking the time and effort and that’s something we don’t always have?
That’s the reason why I’m posting once a week, posting ‘quality’ (I hope?) in stead of quantity. I don’t always have the time to post more often and good research costs time, loads of it!
