It’s not a public secret Google uses links to measure the authority of web pages, therefore link building is an essential element how popular Search Engines rank web pages. As such focusing on a link building campaign should be one of your priorities for a successful search engine optimization strategy.
As Google places higher and higher value on the quality of the content, link building is still effective to boost your search engine rankings. This article will help you understand link building and ensure you spend your time building links that matter and help your site to rank in the search results.
But you must know what you’r doing, because if you overdo on link building it can even be harmful for your search engine rankings, remember link building is a process and takes time, you can’t do this kind of stuff overnite!
What is a (Back) Link
The most common explanation of a (back)link is to see it as a vote or if you will a ‘like’. If page X links to page Y then page X is suggesting page Y is a good page, in other words: page X likes page Y. If page X has another domainname than page Y then this kind of link is called an external link (internal links are links within the same domainname, for instance your navigation links).
External links can be divided in 2 groups, inbound and outbound links. Inbound links are external links pointing to your webpage and outbound links are links pointing from your webpage to another webpage. In order to increase and boost the website ranking, the website should have (much) more inbound links than outbound links.
Why Links Are Important
If a page has lots of links to it, meaning lots of other webpages link to it, then there’s a great chance that page will be regarded as an authority. Because backlinks will increase your link popularity which in turn will increase your Google Page Rank. The majority of your Page Rank is determined by backlinks.
To improve the search engine ranking of your website it is essential to get as many one-way (inbound) links to your website as possible, one-way links are links that link to your site without you linking back to the linkpage (reciprocal backlinks). The more one-way links with niche keywords, the higher the link popularity of the website and ultimately results in your search engine ranking.
Why Links Are Not All Equal
There are some people who will argue any link is worth having, they may be right. However, given the fact websites and webpages don’t have the same ‘weight’ (e.g. high PageRank) it should be clear that obtaining links that have authority on a relevant topic will have a much bigger impact on your web pages than links carrying little or no authority or relevancy.
The only slight complication is the nofollow tag. In a nutshell the nofollow tag allows links to be added to a page as a click-able link to another page without passing any endorsement. These are used for text link adverts for example or in blog-comments where they will send traffic to another page without passing the ‘link love’.
I don’t want to go into detail on the nofollow tag here, read WikiPedia for an very good in depth explanation. In short if you want to link from a page on your site to a page on another site without inferring any kind of endorsement use the nofollow tag.
Watch out with link building, know what you do before you leap into it, the vast majority of link building companies operate by creating link spam. In simple terms they create links from places such as forums, link farms, directories, blogs (thank God for Askimet ;-P), hubs, social bookmarks and an ever increasing number of other ways.
Where can I obtain Quality Inbound Links?
Building a one-way link is time-consuming, but there are plenty of possibilities to obtain quality backlinks from relevant sites. Here just a couple of examples what to look for: Directory Submission sites, Article Submission sites, Social Bookmarking sites, RSS submission sites, Press Release Submission sites, Guest Post Blogging, Blog Commenting and/or Video Submission sites.
Instead of generating 50 articles with lousy content, small business website owners and bloggers can now focus on creating fewer high-quality articles or incoming links, as Google is no longer placing much value in links from article distribution sites such as Ezine.com.
Tip: Focus on getting high-quality links from high-quality websites. Guest posting is still an excellent way to generate high-quality incoming links.
5 Link Building Tips to Increase Google Page Rank
Here are 5 very important tips you need to stick to when building links to your site.
1. Focus on relevant links
Google’s spider is getting smarter and one of the big things for the future of backlinks is relevancy. Focus on getting links from relevant sites that are similar to yours, preferably mentioning the same topics. Backlinks from relevant sites have more link love and will get a higher value than random links from unrelated sites.
2. Avoid nofollow links
Many sites now have the “nofollow” tag which was originally introduced to deter spammers from posting random links everywhere. The nofollow tag means that a link won’t be accredited as a backlink, so when you do get links from nofollow sites they will be worthless from an SEO point of view. Of course the gonzoblog has dofollow links, so please feel free to comment ..
3. Use anchor text
Anchor text is very important in building quality back links. The anchor text the text that contains the link and Google assigns a lot of value to a link with anchor text. Using your keywords as anchor text in your back links is a great way to add link love to your backlinks.
4. Get links from high Page Rank sites
Getting a link from a high page rank site carries more value than a link from a low page rank site. Page rank value gets passed on to an outbound link from the top level URL. In other words, the home page URL carries most of the value and that’s why links from high PR sites are so sought after. If you can you should try and get links from high PR pages – they have even more value (having a permanent link on the indexpage of adobe.com is my ultimate wet dream – Pagerank 9!).
5. Focus on getting permanent backlinks
The only thing that is worse than not ranking well, is to lose a high rank. It’s not uncommon for your site to drop off the SERP’s if you lose your backlinks. If you buy links from link services that require a monthly subscription you run the risk of losing your links when you cancel. This will drop all your links and cause your search engine ranking to drop as well.
