15 Best & Free WordPress Portfolio Themes

There are many graphic/visual designers, such as logo designers, print designers or photographers, who do not have enough knowledge of HTML and CSS to code their own customized portfolio WordPress Theme.

So if you have graphic design work or photos to show off,  then a portfolio styled theme for WordPress could be a good fit for your site. A good portfolio theme is mostly a minimal design, so it will hold back and lets the images of your work do the talking.

Last week I showed you my personal 10 best and free Minimal WordPress Themes, which can also be used as portfolio WordPress Theme. In this article I am going to showcase a small collection of free awesome Portfolio WordPress themes. Hope you will like them.

  1. your site is very helpful, pls provide me some templet for general knowledge, short question & answer site.

    • Hi Mizan,

Donno if I understand you correctly? Do you need a kind of Q&A Template, or do you need to get answers for your questions about WordPress? For the first I really wouldn’t know, try to Google “Q&A WordPress Template”? For the 2nd one, you should go to codex.wordpress.org, it’s the online manual for the community.

Hope one of my both answers was sufficient enough? Cheers & Ciao ..

  2. Hi Gonzo,

First Thank you for putting together those themes – they are really great :)
I’m trying to help a friend who is photographer to make his on-line portfolio.
He wants something neat, simple and dark so I chose Viewport and start playing with it.
I downloaded the last version from the author’s website and followed the instructions for uploading the images on the slider bar but they are not showing and the slider isn’t working as well. And on the dashboard it shows that I installed the older version – don’t know why?…

Any ideas with that issue? Do I need to install some plugin in order the theme to work out?…

    Thank you :)

    • Hi Mira,

Glad you liked my little collection here ;-P

Normally I work with wordpress themes and instantly hack the living sh*t out of them and customize them for my client’s specific wishes and demands. So actually I never ever used a wordpress theme like you are doing ..? But I’m guessing (from a distance, cause I can’t look over your shoulder) that something went wrong while uploading the photo’s, cause you also mention your slider doesn’t work – a slider needs pictures to work.

Maybe it’s a slider which takes the pictures from the different posts and shows your latest uploads/posts? If so, you’ll need to publish a post or two (with photo’s) so you can feed your slider ..?

Maybe you should try deleting the theme and upload it again, because you mention the version nr’s don’t correspondent. But maybe you just should try emailing the designer of this theme to help you out, .. it’s just a thought?

My problem is I can’t help, cause I really need to look into the installation of this specific theme? It’s very hard to guess things when you don’t have any real feedback of what’s happening?

So, wish you lots of success and worst case scenario, maybe you should let a web designer (wordpress designer) look at this. But one who can actually take a closer look – on the spot – at the codes, dashboard and stuff. Thanks for your comment,

      Cheers & Ciao ..

Cheers & Ciao .. (sorry, standaard Engelse afsluiting ;-P)

  4. Hey,

    Thanks for you’re great selection!
    It’s a wonderful collection!

  5. Hi Gonzo,

You’ve put together a nice list of free themes; I’m building my own site using Work-a-holic.
I notices however, that this is actually a Child theme, and while I’m able to use it, I think I am missing some functionality. Do you think it is work buying the parent theme, or just hack away at the CSS and PHP?
For example I don’t think I have the logo uploader, homepage slideshow, post thumbnails, etc…
Again, I can probably make due by creating a chile them and go from there. Do you have any thoughts?
    Thanks again,

    • Hi Matt,

For me buying the parent theme is the ‘worst-case-scenario’. If you’re comfortable coding HTML/CSS/PhP than there are a lot hacks and code snippets to get functionality in every WP site. Check out the category ‘blog/social media’ here on the gonzoblog, there you also can find some code snippets to increase your blog’s functionality. If you’re NOT comfortable with coding, then buy the parent theme if you need to upload a logo or something else.

Putting a logo into a WP theme is changing your header.php in the code and adding style-properties into your CSS for your logo. A slideshow (using jQuery) can be embedded in a custom-page and CSS, script for post-thumbnails comes in your functions.php, etc. Most of the basic templates are the same in a child theme and if you think your missing one (e.g. authors.php or taxonomy.php) you can write these, .. once again if comfortable writing code in HTML/CSS/PhP, if not ask help from someone who is good at coding WP themes.

Thanks for your comment, Cheers & Ciao ..

  6. thanks for helping me make a decision, to redo my site in WP

  7. Hey there. I want to drop you a quick note to state my thanks. I’ve been following your website for a month or more and have absolutely obtained quite a number of reliable information as well as liked the way you’ve organised your blog. I will be wanting to run my own, personal blog on the other hand consider its way too general and I want to focus more about smaller subjects.

    • Hi Alston,

thanks for your comment. To make a website responsive main thing is to organize your content and layout, and then implement some (technical) magic with HTML5/CSS, but there’s no magic without re-architecting your content. If you want to run a (personal) blog and to have some success with it, it’s wise to find your niche (smaller subjects about a niche topic). For a blog to share images, vids and short texts you could maybe best use a Tumblr Blog.

At the moment I’m writing the Tumblr Blogging Platform Series here on the gonzoblog, maybe that is a great blogging platform for you? Anyhow, success with your blog and thanks for your comment! Cheers 7 Ciao ..

  8. Hey thanks for this share very nice templates and useful, hope u will upload more, just go on i like ur site :)

  9. hello blogger, i’d been reading your posts on 15 Best & Free WordPress Portfolio Themes | gonzoblog.nl_V.02 and i genuinely liked them. 1 issue that i observed whilst browsing throughout your blog that a few of the hyperlinks are not working and return error error. this makes the reading experience a bit sour. you have a good blog and i would request you to revise the links so that fascinated folks can get all the details they intend to have. Btw are you on twitter?? i would definitely like to follow you and also get updates in your blog.

    • Hi Vladimir,

Thanks for your comment, really appreciate it! And yes, it’s possible that links in older Articles don’t work anymore .. websites come and go ;-P But I’ll run a broken/dead link checker to see if I can find some broken links and replace them. Thanks for that remark, cause you’re absolutely right it has a sour taste to it.

Check my sidebar, you’ll see my latest Tweets and the link to my Twitter account (@gonzodesign_). Have a nice day, Cheers & Caio ..
